Carrots
Most American varieties originated in France, but new kinds have been introduced and the types have been improved. Carrots are easy to grow, usable at different stages of maturity and have a high food value and vitamin content. This very nutritious vegetable can be grown in the garden nine months of the year. They require a moist, fertile, loose seedbed that is free from clods or stones. They are very cold hardy and may be planted as early as the ground can be worked. Because carrot seed is slow to germinate, many people plant radishes with them to mark the row and break up the soil for the carrots. For home use, sow at two week intervals in rich, deep loam, in rows 18-20 inches apart. |
